Diagnostic sea change continues

Apropos of my last post, British clinical psychologists have now marked their line in the sand against the DSM-5 and the broader psychiatric establishment that it represents.

In an incendiary statement that, like the recent NIMH statement, calls for a “paradigm shift,” the British Psychological Society’s Division of Clinical Psychology decried the categorical classification methods of the DSM-5 as well as the general psychiatric trend toward conceiving of mental illness in purely biomedical terms.

The full statement can be downloaded as a PDF here. I highly recommend those interested to read it; the statement is brief but highlights important points concerning the current classification system, including its minimization of clinical judgment and bias, its biological emphasis, and its Western ethnocentricity.
